He is successful through a reliance on sheer will. I was familiar with Hemingway’s writing style and his tragic life due to preparing a school presentation about him years ago and reading some of his short stories, so I was able to direct my expectations to the necessary direction, ultimately finding – as surprising as this may sound – a lot to enjoy in here. Please stop talking, stop this chattering. Omitted the inner struggling, this story mor be much shorter and just a plain story and people would wonder how can this story could get a Pulitzer Prize.

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. I’m going out with old Carlos in his skiff so as to get it all right. The monster of the deep nearly tugs the fisherman into the sea!

I like how it can be read as exactly what it is and nothing more, or as something layered and complex. But he wrote that story at the height of his powers, and he knew it. It is clear to me that he is a nore of his craft, and I look forward to reading his further work.
